Pest plants and animals need to be effectively managed because they have a significant impact on both the agriculture industry and the environment. They impact on agricultural productivity and sustainability, with over $4.2 billion lost to pest plants and $720 million lost to pest animals in Australia each year. Pest plants and animals also have a serious impact on our native plants, animals and ecosystems.
In the SA Murray-Darling Basin, the pest management program helps the community and industries to:
- prevent the establishment of identified high-risk pests
- assess and prioritise existing pests
- raise awareness of priority pests, their identification and control
- access information and advice about pest control.
