Applications are now open for annual environmental project grants totalling $180,000 from the Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges Natural Resources Management (NRM) Board.

Community Environment Grants are open to community groups, small businesses, non-government organisations and individuals in the Adelaide and Mt Lofty Ranges region.

In a change from previous years, community applicants will now be able to apply for up to $10,000 for projects in five categories: information, education and training; coast, estuarine and marine environments; sustainable living; biodiversity protection; and water for life.

School Environment Grants of up to $2000 are available to preschools, and primary and high schools in the region for proposals that would help students lead sustainability projects, or help them connect with nature, biodiversity and outdoor learning.

Felicity ann Lewis, Presiding Member of the Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges Natural Resources Management Board, said the grants would give schools and community groups the opportunity to undertake valuable environmental projects in their local area.

“Last year the NRM board’s community grants funded 24 projects including a seagrass restoration trial in the Port River, a nature play and coastal display garden at Cape Jervis and a community cleanup of marine debris,” she said.

“At the same time, 41 schools and preschools benefited from our school grants program. Coromandel Valley Primary School used their grant to create a beautiful mural and butterfly garden, while Kangarilla Primary School undertook a Bandicoot habitat restoration project and Torrensville Primary School developed a sustainable food garden for their school.

“These grants fund an incredibly diverse range of projects that support communities in maintaining our natural environment and we hope they inspire people to connect with the natural world and build a desire to protect the environment around them.”

Applications for the 2018-19 Community Environment Grants close on Wednesday 19 December.

Applications for the 2018-19 School Environment Grants close on Friday 1 March 2019.
