Landholder opportunity to learn more about sustainable farming sector
The Kangaroo Island Natural Resources Management Board has invited Land to Market Australia to share its insights into changing market demands within the environmentally sustainable farming sector.
Land to Market Australia is driven by farmers and is part of a global network, providing training, support, mentoring, certification, and branding.
The network seeks to ensure ongoing production and marketing benefits are derived as a result of maintaining and enhancing the condition of our natural assets (e.g. soil) on farm.
Regional NRM Manager for KI Damian Miley said consumers and lenders are becoming increasingly attracted to businesses that can demonstrate good stewardship and ethical practices.
“It’s interesting to learn about techniques farmers from other parts of the country are using,” Mr Miley said.
“It’s important to make sure our farmers have as much information as possible when planning and making decisions for the future of their businesses.
“This will be a great opportunity to learn more about Land to Market Australia’s certification scheme, and how it can meet the needs of farmers and consumers alike.
“By demonstrating environmentally sustainable farming practices and systems, businesses can increase their ‘social licence’ to farm and maintain their market access.”
Local farmers participating in the Future Proofing Agriculture on KI project identified the Land to Market certification scheme as being worthy of further investigation.
“Kangaroo Island farmers are well placed to take advantage of the opportunities good farming practice and environmental certifications can provide, building on their existing stewardship efforts and KI’s strong brand reputation for ‘clean, green’ produce,” Mr Miley said.
On Monday 21 October 2019 a half-day field visit will provide an overview of Land to Market’s on-ground monitoring methodology, followed by a BBQ and short evening workshop covering administration, marketing, and branding.
