The towns of Burra and Eudunda are in this subregion and this area's rich mining history and German heritage provide many opportunities for tourism. Grazing is the primary land use on the ranges and cropping occurs in the valleys. Grassy woodlands and temperate native grasslands are now highly fragmented but provide important habitat for native plants and animals, including the pygmy bluetongue lizard.

What makes this subregion special

Some of the features we value in the Northern Ranges subregion that are supported by natural resources include:

  • Aboriginal cultural values
  • agricultural production from dryland grazing and cropping. Livelihoods supported by mining and heritage tourism
  • strong ties to German heritage around Eudunda, copper mining settlements around Burra, natural history (fossils) and farming traditions
  • permanent water sources provide drought refuge and are highly valued for grazing, tourism and conservation
  • ‘Lifestyle’ values; scenic landscape and rural living
  • biodiversity conservation, including threatened species and ecological communities of national significance.

The main drivers of change to natural resources identified in the  Northern Ranges subregion are:

  • commodity prices and access to domestic and international markets
  • variability in rainfall and other weather conditions (rainfall amount, when it occurs and temperature extremes) affecting the duration of the season
  • climate change and annual variability.

Impacts of climate change

Potential natural resource impacts of climate change projections in the Northern Ranges subregion include:

  • decline in winter rainfall, increase in daily mean, minimum and maximum temperatures and increase in frequency of heatwaves affecting agricultural production, habitat condition, soil health and erosion risk
  • changes in presence and distribution of  weed species due to changed soil conditions or seasonality of rainfall
  • increased risk of wildfire, biodiversity loss and weed invasion after fire.
